We’re creating mini-nature sanctuaries, or “Pocket Preserves,” in Louisville, KY.

A Lytle Slice of Heaven…

Vacant lots can be converted into valuable refuges for native flora and fauna. We call these mini-nature sanctuaries and seed banks “Pocket Preserves,” similar to pocket parks. Green Streets is currently raising funds to purchase two lots on Lytle Street in the Portland neighborhood of West Louisville.

The Portland neighborhood, and West Louisville more broadly, face significant health, environmental and economic challenges. Adjacent to a heavily polluting industrial corridor, West Louisville has the poorest air quality in a city that, due to lax regulations and geographic position, has some of the worst air quality in the country (22nd most polluted by year round particulate matter). The low percentage of tree canopy in the Portland neighborhood is far below the baseline of 40% recommended by American Forests, exacerbating and reflecting existing deficiencies and disparities.

The Lytle Street Pocket Preserve would include a mix of native edible species and plants with high ecological value.  Invasive species will be removed, additional native canopy and understory trees will be planted (pecan, paw paw, persimmon, redbud), and herbaceous plants and shrubs installed throughout.

We're working from a Permaculture framework, in that we're creating a diverse, permanent, plant culture requiring minimal maintenance and upkeep.  Our hope is that this project can serve as a template for mini-nature sanctuaries around the United States-to preserve green spaces in neighborhoods with minimal maintenance as bird and bee sanctuaries, seed banks for native plants, and places for humans to learn about the natural world and their role in it.  By strengthening relationships between neighbors and increasing synergy between organizations operating within neighborhoods (and cities), by building a relationship with the project and space over time, through participation in workdays, potential partnerships with the master gardener association and other community groups, we can ensure the long term viability of this project and others like it.
