Depave Louisville

Surface parking lots in Louisville contribute to the heat island effect, causing urban areas heat to more quickly than the surrounding countryside. Louisville is the fastest heating city in the United States. Depaving projects can assist Louisville in cooling our urban landscape while providing secondary benefits such as inviting and attractive spaces, habitat and food for native wildlife, air purification and stormwater management. We remove a portion of asphalt, concrete and gravel and replace it with beneficial vegetation.

Depave Louisville is seeking partnerships with schools, religious institutions, businesses, and other community-based organizations in areas in need of green space.

Site Hosts are critical to making Depave Louisville events a success

We work with sites where strong community engagement, post-depaving vision, and a solid stewardship plan for the green space exist. Site Hosts link Depave Louisville to the community providing long-term stewardship to the site and help Depave Louisville plan successful events.

It takes time to bring a vision to reality. Depave Louisville is coordinated by volunteers and are only able to host/assist with two depaving events per year. An ideal time frame to begin planning your depave event is at least 9 months in advance of your target depave date. For projects that require funding, planning, permitting, and/or implementation assistance from Depave Louisville, contact us at least a year in advance.

Project partners are asked to contribute a meaningful amount of funding to assist in implementing their project

Project partners can raise thousands of dollars by applying for grants, seeking donated materials from local businesses, holding a fundraiser/dinner, or through an online crowd-sourcing platform.
